RALPH IS A CELEBRITY!

Buy the Friday, Sept. 5th weekend edition of the USA Today paper.

The paper will have a special quarterly magazine insert called "Open Air," a magazine on healthy and adventurous lifestyles.  In it,

they'll be featuring 4 amateur photographers in the USA--and they chose me as one of the four!  How cool is that!?  The picture of mine

that they chose is one I took of my son, Jonathan (2007 Citadel grad, SCE&G and Army National Guard - Military Intel) flying a biplane late one evening in Camden.  I'll be excited to see how they

portray the picture.

Speaking of pictures, USA Today, WIS-TV, The Weather Channel
and the Columbia NOAA office at the airport all chose one of my
lightning pictures as their picture of the week last week and this
week.  You can see it on any of their websites or here at http://www.flickr.com/photos/11435930@N06/2727712699/sizes/m/.  By clicking on the "+ all sizes" button over the picture, you'll see more detail.

AN IMPORTANT SAFETY REMNDER FROM DAVE BEHRENS

I was riding in the Historic Savannah Century Ride last Sunday in Savannah GA.  I had linked up with a tandem and another guy neither which I had ever met.  I was not tired since it was the beginning of the ride.  I was not at all concern from a safety standpoint since I was at the end of a very short pace line and in total control.  We had been riding just a few miles together and were doing an easy 20+ mph.  The riders in front of me appeared to be visually pointing out obstructions and moving in the lane to miss them (so I thought).  Well to make a short story shorter I went down hard due to a long chuck hole in the pavement that I never saw (until picking up the pieces) that my front and back wheels caught.  It was so unexpected and quick that I was totally relaxed when I hit the pavement and that probably contributed to me having no broken bones just a bunch of cuts and bruises.  Based on the physical evidence of the large knot on my left shin and extremely bent handle bar shifter I must of landed on the bike just before hitting my head, shoulder, hip and hands on the pavement.  I am glad to report the helmet did not survive but thank goodness I did.

I just wanted to let every one know how important effective communication is in a pace line.  Especially to road conditions like chuck holes and cracks in the road. Most importantly always wear a properly fitting bicycle helmet. An accident can happen to anybody, anywhere and at any speed.

I hope to see you all on the MS-150.  Dave Behrens
